Jamón Makes the Difference in the Volvo Ocean Race
Seven teams (AkzoNobel, Dongfend Race Team, Mapfre (the Spanish team), Vestas 11th Hour Racing, Team Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag representing Hong Kong, Clean Seas and Brunel) participate in this well-known yacht regatta organised by Volvo Ocean Race.
Through the MAPFRE team, Spain has taken part in eight of the twelve previous editions of the Volvo Ocean Race (also known as the Whitbread Round the World Race), and it is in search of its first victory.
The team returns after a successfully participating in 2014-2015; where it won the Auckland stage (New Zealand) and placed on the podium in three other stages. The MAPFRE team is fighting with all its efforts so that Spain achieves its first win.
At present, it can already celebrate the success of one stage. During Stage 8, in Newport, the Spanish team made history, by finishing that stage first. This route was affected by an electrical fault on the Spanish boat and very weak wind conditions... a difficult situation that the MAPFRE team was able to overcome, giving the other teams a lesson in good management and ingenuity.
The demands in this sport are extreme and, therefore, diet is one of the key factors so that the teams can keep going. Their diet tends to basically consist of freeze-dried foods. But sometimes they make an exception, and in this case the MAPFRE team has something to cheer them up each day: jamón. This is a food source that is rich in nutrients and provides them with the protein and fat needed to regain energy after sailing each day. They have a daily portion of 400gr, and it seems that the jamón is making a difference to achieve these results.
By vacuum packing the Ibéricos de Antaño jamón, it is kept intact for longer, keeping the same taste and smell as the first day. Plus, they can be carried on board for the entirety of the round the world regatta. What's more, the fact that it comes in slices means that it is easier to eat, portion control and save time as it is ready to open and serve.
Here at the Comapa Group we wish the MAPFRE team wind and good luck!
